WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In this prequel, Van Wilder (now played by Jonathan Bennett) begins his freshman year at Coolidge College. There, he battles the ROTC and falls for Kristen Cavallari.
WHO MADE IT?
Writer Todd McCullogh has no previous credits of note.
Director Harv Glazer directed the Jamie Kennedy film KICKIN IT OLD SKOOL.
IS IT ANY GOOD?
2002’s NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VAN WILDER was a popular comedy, mostly due to its lead performance by Ryan Reynolds. It wasn’t a great, or even good comedy, but it worked because of Reynolds.
Well, Reynolds is gone. He is off starring with Sandra Bullock
The National Lampoon sponsorship is missing as well (but then again the magazine has been gone for twenty years).
The new Van is Jonathan Bennett. He played Bo Duke in the direct to DVD THE DUKES OF HAZZARD: THE BEGINNING, the role that Seann William Scott played in the film and John Schneider had in the TV series. I guess he has sort of become the direct to video understudy. Can’t afford the original movie star? Jonathan Bennett will star in your direct to DVD feature.
Also in the cast is Kristin Cavallari. You may remember her from LAGUNA BEACH. She was L.C.’s nemesis, the only person on the show with an actual personality. Kristin is soon to be replacing L.C. as the star of THE HILLS. She seems to be the big selling point of this release. She has little to do in this film, acting wise.
Oh, I should be talking about the film, shouldn’t I?
As far as direct to DVD sequels to popular comedies go (the AMERICAN PIE films, the DUKES OF HAZZARD films) they are all pretty terrible. VAN WILDER is at that level. It is not a good film. I didn’t laugh once. Most of the humor revolves around bathroom humor which isn’t my thing.
If you are a fan of that type of comedy, and have worn out your VAN WILDER DVD as well as the first sequel THE RISE OF TAJ, hey, knock yourself out.
To others, there is no reason to see it.
I never thought I would write this, but the director’s KICKIN IT OLD SKOOL was a much funnier film.
WHAT IS ON THE DVD?
VAN WILDER FRESHMAN YEAR is available in both R rated and Unrated versions. The unrated features the typical topless extras.
